Big Brother Canada 6 interview: Maddy Poplett reflects on her game, Kaela, and competitions

Maddy Poplett

Maddy Poplett had herself an excellent run on Big Brother Canada 6She made it all the way to the final five without winning a single competition, and she also had some pretty close allies in Paras and Will who wanted to take her further. Unfortunately, her eviction on Thursday night’s episode had very much to do with the wrong person being in power in Kaela. She and Derek targeted her and at that point, there wasn’t much else she could do after the Veto Ceremony.

In our exit interview this week Maddy reflects on her game, her attempt to campaign, and also whether or not the experience lived up to her expectations as a long-time superfan of the show.

CarterMatt – How do you feel about your game this season looking back?

Maddy – Looking back, I feel good about my game this season. Fifth place is nothing to cry about, even though if somebody was going to cry about it, it probably would be me (laughs).

But, for my game overall, I’m happy to be where I am.

After losing the Veto, how good of a chance did you think you had to stick around in the game?

Hopeful Maddy thought ‘maybe this will be okay,’ but realistic Maddy though ‘this is probably not ideal.’ It was an uphill battle at that point.

What was the best argument you think you gave while campaigning?

In final five there’s not a lot of room for movement, so even though you only need two votes, people have already experienced as much game as you have and need to make their own personal best decisions.

So I think the best point that I made was having them consider that the Final Four Veto, while it would likely be mental, was not the only ticket to final three. The HoH itself was also a ticket to final three. So, for the two boys to consider their ability to win a physical or possibly endurance HoH competition against me, it was very high that they would win. For them to put the emphasis on my mental strength in a potential Veto was, in my opinion, not the best way to prioritize. It was to consider their chance at the HoH, which would be better if they were playing against me than Paras.

Is it easier or harder to take your elimination knowing you were close to the end?

I believe it actually is easier. There were a lot of Big Brother hurdles that I was able to jump like a double and triple eviction. There was also a twist involved that I wasn’t a casualty of.

When you get to final five or surviving the triple, which in this case was the same thing, you can taste it. The money is close. It’s hard to swallow in that respect, but to say that I came in fifth and survived a lot of things that other people didn’t, that’s a comfort.

How much harder was it to campaign up on the block against Paras than it would have been otherwise?

Obviously it wasn’t easy to say ‘can I stay against my best friend?’, but when it came down to it there wasn’t a lot of room for manipulation. It just comes down to what people thought was the safest for them. So, to have it be against Paras wasn’t ideal, but it didn’t necessarily make it more difficult. Maybe it should’ve, but it wasn’t too much of a factor.

What’s the one move you wish you had made this season, but didn’t?

I would’ve loved to win a competition rather than coming in second place in a lot of them. I would’ve loved to win HoH and actually make a move for myself. I promised a lot of big, aggressive behavior in a lot of my preseason stuff and that didn’t end up coming true. I would’ve loved being able to pull out a win so I could come up with one of my own moves.

Kaela got you out on her latest HoH. What do you think about her as a player?

I think as a player Kaela is very strong. I think any person getting to the final four is strong. I think she has a very self-centric look at the game and may not credit others as much as she should for her position. It takes a village to win Big Brother. There are a lot of variables at your disposal, and I think she does very much see the game as if she was in charge of the whole thing. Now, I may see some of the conversations and find that to be true, but my perception is that she is self-centric, but still strong.

Whose game this season surprised you the most?

Derek. Big Derek! He really started to figure it out. He played from a very sensible standpoint and understood that there were things that he would and would not know. He had a good self-awareness throughout the game and he’s played that angle very well.

Who are you looking forward to seeing in the jury house?

I would love to watch Kaela walk in behind me! Not only because she’s the one who evicted me, but I also think she had a chance to make a game-winning move this week [in nominating Derek] and she did not.

It would be nice to see her walk in, but from a personality perspective I would love to see any of them, but of course Will or Paras would be fun to hang out with. But, I want to see them get to final two.

As a whole, did being a part of the show live up to your expectations?

Oh, it was boring. Just kidding (laughs). It was amazing! Everything about it, I don’t have the vocabulary to even describe it. It was incredible to be on Big Brother and it beyond exceeded my expectations. I always wished that one day a houseguest could articulate how it felt so that as a viewer, I could understand. Now that I’ve been a houseguest, I now understand that it’s just not possible. Until you’re in the house or in the game, you can not expect what it is. Expect the unexpected is even more true a phrase than I thought.
