Lucifer season 3 episode 21 review: Sympathy for the devil
Remember last week when Marcus Pierce was out to cause chaos and heartbreak? Times have changed! Now that he doesn’t have the mark anymore, and he’s realized that Chloe’s love for him is likely the reason, he doesn’t want to die anymore. Instead, he wants to have a normal existence with Chloe and to move forward with a relationship that is real and human. He wants the same things that everyone else does … which apparently also includes marrying her.
This is the surprise from the end of the episode: Marcus getting down on one knee and asking for her hand. To go along with that, Chloe said yes! If we actually liked Marcus and rooted for him and Chloe to be together, this probably would be a cause for celebration. Unfortunately, it’s just a cause for sadness as Lucifer looked on, conveniently right when he was going to visit her and pour out his heart. For much of this episode we watched the character desperately try to prove that he was better than Marcus through making a wide array of romantic gestures. Yet, at the same time he never actually showed that he meant any of them as something more than a chest-puffing match. Eventually, through solving the case of a dead ballerina, he realized exactly what was missing. He was never going to win her over doing the same thing that he’d been doing. He needed to confront his feelings and by clear with her about them … but it may be too late.
Suffice it to say, we’re sad about all of this. Not even Charlotte trying to seduce Marcus midway through the episode seemed to have much of an impact on him.
What else is problematic for Lucifer?
For starters, Maze is still intent on finding her way back to hell even if she doesn’t have Marcus on her side anymore. We don’t want to forget about this given that she’s probably going to try to make some sort of huge stunt before the end of the season. That’s a problem for Lucifer since it’s a clear distraction from whatever he wants. The only way presumably for him to get Chloe back on his side would be to point out why Marcus originally wanted to be with her in the first place … which is probably tough since he’d also have to admit to lying to her.
CarterMatt Verdict
Sometimes a devastating episode can be good for a show’s quality and Lucifer season 3 episode 21 is that. While it may have been too romance-heavy for some out there, personally this is the content that we’ve been waiting to see and we’re more than thrilled to have an opportunity to dive into much of this.
One element of the series that really doesn’t get enough praise is just how fantastic Tom Ellis is as Lucifer Morningstar — he somehow manages to balance out the wickedness and the charm with enough surprising vulnerability. Even though Lucifer may be the devil, your heart somehow still breaks for him.
