Outlander season 4 filming: Where we are and what’s to come

OutlanderWe’ve been lucky over the past couple of days to have a few more updates than usual pertaining to Outlander season 4. We’ve talked about a fiery sequence and some Highland Games — now, we feel like the time is right to do a bit of a reset as to where things are right now and, to go along with that, where things could still be going.

For those who did not know, filming for season 4 first began back in October. That means that we’re now seven months into what is a nine-month shoot. There are 13 episodes in season 4, as there has been every year since season 2, and just based on proportions alone it would seem as though producers would be setting up the final three or four episodes at around this point. Note that the series doesn’t always shoot in order, but in terms of total content they probably have at least eight or nine episodes’ worth of material in the can. Otherwise, they’d be scrambling like crazy to fill out some of the remaining content that is out there.

As for what has filmed so far (note: season 4 spoilers ahead), there is quite a bit of content already locked up whether it be Brianna’s journey to America or her meeting with Jamie. Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have been spotted filming together numerous times; while there haven’t been many public sightings of Ed Speleers as new character Stephen Bonnet, there have been some. There have been night shoots aplenty plus many scenes filmed early in the morning. When you are a show that films as much on location as Outlander does, you have to take advantage of the surroundings rather than work them to fit your schedule.

In terms of what’s still coming, one of the biggest things is a potentially-elaborate sequence involving many aboriginal actors. This is something that the producers were specifically seeking out in Canada earlier this year and these could be some of the bigger sequences this season. Those begin in May and could run into the end of filming in June. In general, though, filming has been a little more hush-hush as of late, presumably as a means to try and combat some spoilers that have started to run rampant. (This is an effect of the show’s popularity more than anything!)
