Shadowhunters season 3 episode 6 sneak peek: Alec, Magnus, and fear
Anyhow, Magnus’ commentary about French toast and Julie Child at the start of the preview is really just a lead-in to some of the more serious conversation that is present here. If you recall, last week Alec came to the realization that Magnus was holding onto tiny mementos from many of his other past relationships. In the aftermath of that, Alec is understandably insecure. He doesn’t want to become just another trinket, and he also fears for the time in which he’s old and feeble. He doesn’t ever want to be in a position where he feels like a burden to his immortal great love. This is a concept that has been explained on several shows before, but we never really tire of it just because it is so fascinating. It’s a macrocosm of what you see on stories where you have someone in a relationship dying of cancer — they are in love, but they also worry that they are becoming too great a weight on the person they care about. It’s then up to that other person to reassure them otherwise.
In the case of Magnus here, he does his part to make Alec feel better about his mortality and that he is special, and not just another trinket in the box. The support the two have for each other is one of the reasons why Malec is not some ordinary relationship. It’s one of the most passionate and mature ones on television because these two men are thoughtful, intelligent, and know how to address and resolve conflict. It’s natural for Alec to be concerned about something like this and it’s also understandable that Magnus would be there to help him through it. He likely knew that these insecurities would be expressed in due time. Their relationship dynamic speaks to the strength of the writing; we’ll see what happens further when this episode airs on Freeform Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
