Once Scandal series finale wraps, don’t expect a revival

The Scandal series finale is airing on ABC Thursday night, and while it may be exciting to think about future adventures for Olivia Pope, it doesn’t appear to be in the cards.

Speaking (per TVLine) in a conference call with reporters promoting the finale, show creator Shonda Rhimes made it clear that the series “is done” with the finale, and there are no plans to revisit the series or do a spin-off down the line. The site also states that there aren’t any plans to feature any characters on How to Get Away with Murder in the future, which is somewhat disappointing since there was some potential with Marcus and Michaela based on what we saw in the recent crossover.

Ultimately, though, we do think that there is something valuable and cathartic in getting closure for a long-running show. After all, it’s not something that we get altogether often with many shows. Even when we do, we’ve seen with Will & Grace and Roseanne that there is a willingness to go back and rewrite history just for the sake of figuring out a way to keep the shows around after their original finale.

For Rhimes, it feels pretty clear that she is moving forward — and why wouldn’t she? She’s still an executive producers on all of her Shondaland ABC shows and beyond that, has a new deal over at Netflix to develop future projects. Here’s something interesting that is somewhat of an underreported story these days: The last show that she created herself for ABC was Scandal, as How to Get Away with Murder, Station 19, For the People, and Still Star-Crossed were the creations of other producers under the Shondaland banner. It’s been a while since we had a chance to see a sole creation of hers and we’re curious to see what that looks like.
