Arrow season 7: Colton Haynes promoted to series regular

Colton Haynes

When Arrow season 7 premieres on The CW this fall, signs point to there being another notable return in Colton Haynes. The actor is returning to the series after previous stints as Roy Harper, and this time around he will be doing so as a series regular.

In a statement, the show’s producers had the following to say about the move:

“We’re very fortunate and excited to welcome back Colton to Arrow … While we’ve always enjoyed Colton’s returns to the show, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him return as a proper series regular — and we’re very excited about all the creative opportunities Roy Harper’s return affords us.”

Meanwhile, Haynes also added the following:

“I could not be happier to return to my role as Roy Harper alongside my Arrow family.”

As excited as CarterMatt is to get Colton back (Roy is a great character and this could allow Oliver Queen to get a notable ally once more), there are some major questions that we have about it. When Willa Holland exited the show earlier this season, she did so stating that being around Roy was one of the ways in which to make her whole. Yet, what happens to Thea now if Roy is coming back full-time? It doesn’t seem as though she’s going to be around and either the writers are going to have to find some other sort of permanent solution for her or kill her off.

What we do love about this move though, is that it restores the series more towards its golden era back in the second season. If only Katie Cassidy can get more of a consistent role and we’ll be happy. We’ve long been a defender of the New Team Arrow (Rick Gonzalez was especially incredible in the “Specter of the Gun” episode last season), but the writers have butchered some of those characters so much this season that it’s hard to figure out just what can be done with them from here.
