Saturday Night Live cold open: ‘Donald Trump’ & a Baltic press conference
Ultimately, SNL did decide this week to give you another dose of Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, mostly so that we could get a press conference with him featuring the leaders of some Baltic states. He talked about tariffs, made some Monopoly references, and then also read from a “prepared statement” that showed that his Trump really hates to read. The moment that the statement was over, he proceeded to congratulated Vladimir Putin for a Russian victory.
Overall, the strange thing about Baldwin’s Trump at this point is just that it wasn’t altogether high energy. That’s somewhat funny given what Trump used to call Jeb Bush — and then also funny because at one point during the sketch, Trump actually fell asleep.
There really just wasn’t that much about this sketch that was new or altogether notable. It was a nice way to throw a bunch of recent headlines into a single sketch, but that was the most appealing thing about it. The most frustrating thing is that the show had weeks to come up with something and it would’ve been so much better had the writers just focused on one headline rather than bouncing around to a number of different topics. Eventually, this all just boiled down to Trump seeing a giant rabbit and then saying that he doesn’t care about America at all.
We will say this — the random part of the sketch comparing Mexican immigrants to Mad Max: Fury Road was pretty funny.
