Ransom season 2: What should the ratings expectations be?
More so than any other day of the week, Saturdays are the Wild West for television programs. It’s pretty hard to know sometimes precisely what networks are looking for out of it just because the ratings expectations are so different. You are not going to have a hit show airing on Saturdays just because there are so few people around — especially young people. Getting anyone to consistently sit around their television on Saturday night, other than to maybe watch SNL, feels in some ways like a pretty impossible task.
Over the course of its first season airing on Saturday nights, we ended up seeing Ransom draw (in America) a 0.4 rating on average in the 18-49 demographic. That’s a number that would get it canceled almost anywhere else but it’s decent enough to allow the show to continue in this time slot. Ransom is aided dramatically by the fact that it is a Canadian show and with that, CBS doesn’t require as great of ratings in order to keep it on the air. The Canadian ratings may matter even more than the US ones, but these two countries often take cues from each other when it comes to their success.
Our belief in general entering Ransom season 2 is that if the ratings are similar to the first season, there’s a good chance that Ransom will return for more. If not, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it canceled. This was a show that almost went the way of the dodo after the first season, so we do think that it could be walking on some sort of tight-rope. While we understand that watching television on a Saturday night is somewhat inconvenient our advice remains the same — if you enjoy Ransom, keep watching it live! Otherwise, there may not be a chance to see it again in 2019.
