Will an Outlander Emmy win improve season 4 ratings?
For the sake of this CarterMatt article though, the question that we want to ponder is a little bit different: Are there any commercial benefits to an Outlander Emmy win? Would something like this actually boost the series’ ratings for season 4?
When you look at some of the past history of Emmy winners, the results are somewhat mixed. A positive example of this is Bryan Cranston winning multiple Emmys during the early days of Breaking Bad. These wins proved to be very useful in giving AMC a platform in which to better promote this show; that is something that they were able to move even more into Mad Men. Over time both these shows built audiences off of their critical acclaim and being at the Emmys introduced new viewers to each one of them. A similar phenomenon has happened in the past with Veep and The Big Bang Theory in the comedy space, though there are probably some other factors that also helped in their ratings gains such as lead-ins and syndication, in the case of the latter.
On the flip side, there are some other Emmy winners that haven’t seen too much commercial growth at all after the fact. Atlanta this year, for example, is down by more than 20% on average in the live ratings versus season 1. The same goes for Mr. Robot after a big win from Rami Malek.
The simplest conclusion to draw is that there may be some correlation between an Emmy win and a show’s popularity; however, it doesn’t necessarily help that much if a show is already fairly well-known or isn’t the subject matter of a particular viewer. There’s not enough here to say that Outlander winning Emmys will improve its total audience too much, but it certainly does not hurt. Also, it’s a wonderful gift for everyone who has been watching and rooting for the show to have this recognition for so long.
