Pretty Little Liars spin-off The Perfectionists pilot wraps filming
In a post on Twitter, new cast member Sofia Carson confirmed this week that filming has wrapped in Portland, where production currently is. Given that this series is not set in Rosewood, but instead in Beacon Heights, apparently it was determined that this in turn required a different setting and aesthetic. We get that, given that the hope here is for this series to have its own unique look and flair — even if Pretty Little Liars performers Janel Parrish and Sacha Pieterse are both going to remain part of the cast. There is going to be a new mystery at the heart of this town, so from that vantage point The Perfectionists is going to have a lot in common with the original series.
So why is filming wrapping after just one episode? While it’s basically a guarantee that you are going to see The Perfectionists on the air eventually (barring a last-second surprise) it does make a certain degree of sense for Freeform to want to take a good look at the finished pilot before pushing forward. Given that the hope here is to have a series stick around on the air for many years, you in turn want to make sure that the pilot is as strong as possible. This is your foundation, and if you need to do some reshoots it makes sense to do some of those now before things get too far into the series.
As for when The Perfectionists could premiere there is no set date as of yet — it seems a little too soon to ask for summer, but late 2018 / early 2019 sounds like it could be a possibility if filming resumes early enough. One of the questions you do need to wonder in the process, though, is whether or not the same audience that watched Pretty Little Liars is still going to be around to watch the new show. Audiences do get older, and with that their interests often change at the same time.
