Pretty Little Liars: spinoff casts Descendants’ Sofia Carson
According to Deadline, the series will premiere on Freeform and be written and executive produced by I. Marlene King. The series will be based on PLL author Sara Shepard’s book of the same name. Here’s a description of what to expect:
“The series is set in the town of Beacon Heights, where everything seems perfect; it revolves around the lives of five young girls who plot the killing of Nolan Hotchkiss, a womanizer who used all five of them. They never actually succeed with the plan, but soon Hotchkiss is found dead the same way they planned, and the girls soon become prime suspects of the murder. They must now find out who killed him, and why.”
I. Marlene King teased a little more about the series to TVLine:
“There is a big mystery, and there is a murder, and there are some characters who are a fractured group at the beginning of our story, and through a murder they become friends. We’re meeting four new characters who are Perfectionists — and one of them won’t make it to the end of the pilot.”
Carson is set to play Ava, who is described as “a trendsetting blogger and coder who strives to be a fashion icon.”
For those who haven’t read the books, it will be interesting to see how the PLL character tie into this story. Did they move to this new town only be confronted with similar situations from their past? It’s possible. Meanwhile, will this new series stick to the books? As fans of PLL will recall, the series stayed true to the book series for little while, but it soon became apparent that it wasn’t going to stay that way. So will this show follow a similar pattern? Considering it’s a spinoff we wouldn’t be surprised. If the series strays away from the books those who have read it won’t be able to tell what will happen next. However, we also wouldn’t be completely shocked if it stuck to the books to be a little different from PLL.
Currently, there is no official released date. Best guess is late 2018 or a 2019 release date. The only information we have regarding filming is that it will take place in Portland in the Pacific Northwest, where Beacon Heights will be set. Casting is also still underway, but we would expect the last remaining lead parts of Caitlin, Mackenzie, Julie, and Parker to be announced soon.
