Does Absentia season 2 need its own Trinity Killer?
CarterMatt knows that Absentia season 2 is a long ways from premiering and that filming will likely not begin until later this year, and that is assuming that the Amazon series is officially renewed. Nothing is official as of yet, but signs are pointing in that direction.
For now, the discussion that we want to have is regarding villains, given that just about every series needs them. With Absentia in particular, it needs to keep shaking things up when it comes to the reveal of some of these said villains. There are a couple of different ways in which you can do this — there is the season 1 version, one where you actually don’t learn much about the bad guy until the end of the season. Then, there is what we like to refer to as the Trinity Killer approach.
The name here is a clear reference to Dexter season 4, one of the best seasons of the Showtime series to date thanks largely to the performance of John Lithgow. He was imposing, terrifying, and offered a little bit of a different dimension to the series that we hadn’t quite seen before. Also, you saw him in some shape or form from the beginning of the season. We were in a position where it wasn’t too hard to figure out who the bad guy was and the engagement on the season came more from seeing some of the other characters catch up. You had a chance to be riveted and/or terrified by the performance leading up to the final showdown. It may produce less of a buzzworthy mystery, but the performance and the buildup can prove to be equally worth it if done right.
During the first season, we had the mystery on Absentia; now, it may be time for a villain we get to see play their part for a much larger percentage of the season. It would be super-interesting to see a prominent actor cast as the season 2 Big Bad, and then go over and do a one-season arc that rocks the world of Emily Byrne and tests her in some surprising ways. Maybe it’s someone she can relate to on some level due to a shared history of trauma, yet, they traveled on a different path in life and is now taking out some of their frustration and rage on others. This would offer up a great opportunity for the series to stretch itself and offer something that feels very different from season 1.
Even if Absentia goes in a direction that is a little more similar to the season 1 story, we won’t be disappointed — season 1 offered up a great story and wonderful performances. Yet, change is often integral to the future success of any series and we absolutely think that it could be the case here as well
