Outlander notes: Filming hopes; Tobias Menzies still open to return
Sam Heughan said recently that he was heading back to Scotland in order to film the Jamie – Brianna meeting scene, and we have to imagine that this is filming around now — or at least the episode containing the scene is. Given that there have been few public sightings of the cast as of late, our easy assumption at present is that Outlander is filming either in an extremely secluded spot or in-studio at the moment — which is totally fine by us. While it’s been rather fun to have a chance to see some of these actors out and about in costume, this is really one of those scenes that we don’t want to see spoiled in advance. It’s more exciting, at least to us, to actually get the vibe of it when it airs during the season.
Hopefully, though, we will get a little more information on whether or not it’s happened/has happened soon.
Tobias Menzies still open to a return
Menzies has said in the past that he is game to play either Frank Randall or Black Jack in the future, even though they are both dead, and we do think that it is possible the writers will revisit that even if it is just for a brief scene or a flashback. (Or, if we flash back to the moment in season 1 where Frank presumably sees Jamie.) For now, though, it doesn’t seem as though Menzies will be making a cameo in season 4. He hasn’t been on set as to our knowledge and he has other things going on — including promoting The Terror, his new series premiering Monday on AMC. (If you want to watch all episodes starting Monday, there is a way in which you can do that.)
Speaking to Parade, though, Tobias continued to make it clear what his overall interest level is at the moment when it comes to a possible Outlander return coming up:
With a story that has time travel, the opportunity to bring back the characters who have died is there. At the moment, they’re trying to be pretty faithful to the books, so to bring those characters back would be a departure from that. But, of course, they’re family. That was a big part of my life for four years.
Ultimately, this is just the sort of situation where we just have to wait and see more of what happens. It would obviously be great in order to get more Menzies but we also don’t think it’s a requirement to enjoy Outlander moving forward. It’s all up to if the writers find a way to utilize his extraordinary talent.
