Fargo season 4 heading back to the past once more

While it is not 100% clear at the moment as to whether or not Fargo season 4 is airing next year or not, one thing is starting to become clear: The plan is to move the series further down the line once more. The second season of the show on FX was a period piece and at the moment, all signs suggest that the fourth is going to follow that tradition.

Speaking per The Hollywood Reporter, the writing genius behind the series in Noah Hawley had the following to say as for some of his specific plans regarding the series:

“I now have an idea that’s less in the corner of my eye and more in front of me … I don’t have a lot of time right now to focus on it. What I can say is that it will be another period piece.

“More and more as I think about telling stories in this vein and what the original film is about, these are really American stories and stories about the American landscape, and the things that people do for money … I feel like I have a very interesting and exciting direction to go in. I’m trying to find the time to get it down on paper.”

This new idea sounds interesting on paper, but obviously it is very difficult to dive into some sort of further analysis without knowing the answer to a few other fundamental questions, including just what the time period for the new season is. It would be interesting to go back into the 1920’s or the thirties to touch on some of the earlier days of crime within the region. Fargo (the city itself) was founded in the late 19th century, so that gives you a somewhat accurate estimation as to how far back in theory Hawley could choose to go. Doing something around the Great Depression could prove interesting, especially since we’re not altogether sure there is a time in history when people were more desperate than they were then.
