13 Reasons Why season 2 will include new cast introduction talking subject matter
If you look below, you can see a new message from Katherine Langford and the rest of the cast explaining some of the subject matter of the show and offering a warning that the content of this series is not for everyone. They also encourage viewers to seek help or talk to those close to them if they are struggling in some way. This message will air before the start of both season 1 and season 2 on Netflix — in addition to any future seasons that are ordered.
13 Reasons Why season 1 drew a great deal of attention for its difficult but relevant content, but also at the same time a certain degree of controversy. One of the biggest negative criticisms for the series was that it did not offer enough resources or ways in which for its viewership to separate the world of the show from real life; putting these actors outside of their characters for this introduction is a way in which to do that. Netflix is showing some cognizance now that this is a show very different from any other that is out there. With that, it has to be both treated and handled in different ways. It has content within it that is darker and more graphic than just about any other teen series out there; to go along with that, it is told in a way that it is supposed to feel fairly true to life.
We certainly applaud Netflix for doing this and also having the awareness to know that some shows may have a greater impact on lives than others. Given that teens are often so impressionable, this is a show that needs this sort of deft touch and extra attention.
