Dynasty season 1 hits (relatively) uncharted territory for low ratings

Dynasty episode 10 return date

If you love Dynasty on The CW, at this point you should stop thinking about a possible renewal; instead, you should just hope with every fabric of your being that the network doesn’t decide to pull the series early in favor of something else.

Last night’s new episode of the show ended up generating just a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s bad — really bad. The last time we can think of where a major network show posted that rating for a new episode is Cult back when that CW series was moved to Friday nights. It’s possible that others have hit that rating since then but it’s once in a blue moon and it doesn’t happen all that often … mostly because the network has a tendency to pull shows before they get to this point.

So why has Dynasty stuck around on the air? The franchise name may be a part of it, as could be the fact that The CW wants to have a mixture of shows on the air from both CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. TV. (Dynasty comes from the former, which is the less-popular of the two studios these days.) It also has a very good streaming deal with Netflix internationally, which is probably why it got a back nine order in the first place. Unless Netflix is desperate to acquire the series (which doesn’t seem likely), we don’t imagine there being many other episodes of the show coming up in the near future.

The failures of Dynasty really speak to two different things, with the first significant one being a question as to why The CW chose to pick the series up in the first place. This is not meant to be a slam on the writers or producers; instead, it’s just recognition of the fact that this is a show that really didn’t seem to have an audience on this network that would be familiar with the original. It’s also another sign that the reboot / remake trend is starting to dry up. While remaking Charmed and Roswell seems to make a little more sense for the network, we’re still not altogether sure that either one of those shows is going to be a runaway hit either.
