This Is Us season 2 finale review: Pairings, partings, and problems

This Is Us season 2 finale

The This Is Us season 2 finale has officially come and gone now on CBS and we do think that there is one way in which we’d describe it: Emotional. There were times in which you could smile, but there are also some times in which you want to shout “why?!!!” to the heavens. Both of these happened over the course of Tuesday night’s “The Wedding.”

Let’s start here with the great news: Despite encountering a number of different roadblocks along the way, Toby and Kate are now officially an item! The two parties got married and said their vows — the only real concern we had was whether or not Kate was going to bail after she realized that Toby wasn’t there in the vision that she had of her life / Jack and Rebecca’s vow-renewal ceremony in the event he didn’t die. The questions we’re left with

For starters, is Toby dying? It does appear as though he’s going to be sick in the future, which could set up Kate for more tragedy given that she has already lost one of the other most-important men in her lives in Jack. Meanwhile, we’re certainly worried about what is going on with Randall and Tess in the future, where they have to go and “see” someone but Tess doesn’t appear to be ready to do so. Is Beth in danger?

Finally, there’s also Kevin deciding to go to Vietnam, where his father fought in the war … with Beth’s cousin? The two seemed to begin a relationship at the tail end of the finale and that does seem to be a foundation for so much more. In between a fear of death sort of situation and some big things coming for Kevin, there’s a lot to look forward to both in season 3 and beyond.

CarterMatt Verdict

Overall, the This Is Us season 2 finale proved itself to be fascinating, thought-provoking, and of course left us with plenty of questions at the end. We anticipated that we’d be instantly eager to check out the third season; we’re now officially chomping at the bit, though we do wish that This Is Us could slowly start to get over its fascination with death.
