NCIS: New Orleans: Scott Bakula pays tribute to D’Wayne Swear, inspiration for Dwayne Pride
According to Deadline, Swear passed away on March 5 after a battle with cancer at the age of 60. He served as a technical advisor for NCIS: New Orleans, helping to ensure that everything presented on the screen was accurate to some of his own experiences as a Naval investigator.
In a statement today, Bakula had the following to say about Swear and the good that he brought to the world:
“D’Wayne led with a grin, a hug and a joke … He was the heart and soul of our show. The greatest ambassador for the city of New Orleans and a shining beacon for good cops everywhere. His life was devoted to service … to his family, to NCIS, to law enforcement, to everyman … no matter his or her station in life.
“He was a legend. Everywhere we went law enforcement officers sought him out to shake his hand and relive old times. I was proud to know him and humbled to portray a character based on his honorable life.”
Even though the NCIS franchise is fiction, the writers often do their best to capture at least some of the work that the real organization does. These people are very much unsung heroes. Before NCIS the series even aired, there was a reasonably good possibility that many out there had not even heard about the actual organization; the show did a very good job bringing some of their heroics to life.

Swear will be missed, and our thoughts go out to everyone who knew him. We view this series as entertainment, but in real life his actions are worth so much more as he helped people in absolute times of need. (Photo: CBS.)
