Absentia season 2 character spotlight: Emily Byrne’s possible future

Emily Byrne

Who wants to dive into some Absentia season 2 character spotlights? Given that it’s been a little while now since the conclusion of season 1, it feels like the right time to start to look towards the future.

Before kicking off, it’s worth noting that Absentia has not been officially renewed yet for a second season; there’s been unofficial chatter about it, but odds are there will be a bigger, more official announcement down the road. For now, we just want to focus on the characters, starting today with (of course) Emily Byrne. Stana Katic was sensational in the lead role on the series, a survivor of terrible trauma who is still working to figure out the best way to live her life now. How do you come back from what she’s been through?

Overall, CarterMatt has a few different suggestions as to how the writers should move with this story now.

1. Get Emily back in the FBI – This was suggested to be coming up at the end of the first season, so why not push her all the way in that direction? Emily’s story will be far more interesting moving forward if she has the capacity to officially investigate cases — even if she ends up breaking some of the rules along the way.

2. Explore the new family dynamics – We’d love to see some new scenes with Emily and Alice in particular, seeing if the two can develop a relationship after the two got off to such a terrible start. We like that the series didn’t go the predictable route in having Emily end up with Nick at the end of season 1; with that, we want to see how this new family unit functions and if Emily and Alice get on the same page for the sake of Flynn.

3. Obviously, deal with the surprise in the closing minutes – Judging from that final moment alone, Emily may have been a little more susceptible to her “treatments” than she first thought and may have it in her to kill without much memory of it. Is that trigger always going to be there, or is there a way to conquer it?

4. Give her a new partner – It would be nice to see her paired up with a new agent at the FBI, someone a little less familiar with her — that could end up serving as a fresh start for her. It gives her a chance to either embrace this clean slate or watch it fall apart.

5. A new villain – Hey, for every great hero you need an equally-great villain. This just feels necessary to make the series as great as it should be for season 2.
