TV Lifespans: Beyond Suits season 8, what should the future hold?
We feel like the series is the perfect entry in the CarterMatt TV Lifespans series just because of how much it’s already been at the center of conversation already regarding its future. After all, Suits season 8 was renewed recently, and in some ways this represents a significant new chapter for the series. Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle are both departing, but to go along with that Dule Hill is being promoted to series regular and Katherine Heigl is signing up.
Will these moves allow the show to find a new life for itself? It’s possible, given that the two come with new perspective, new energy, and also a new audience. While Dule was a part of season 7, he also wasn’t really promoted beyond just the show’s core following. That could be different for season 8 when he is more firmly entrenched as a part of the main cast. Meanwhile, we know that Heigl has her fans — they weren’t enough to keep Doubt on the air, but this is a different situation since they are joining a loyal contingent of viewers already out there.
We know that show creator Aaron Korsh has already noted that Suits season 8 is not necessarily the end of the road; we’re still divided as to whether or not it should be, and much of that depends on the new cast members and the story. Much of it will depend on how much the new characters refresh things. If it feels like there’s new story to tell and we’re engaged as much as we’ve been, we’ve personally got no problem keeping things going for a little while. However, if there are some bumps in the road we do feel like it may be time to end things before Suits starts to lose all steam. The ratings are good enough to keep Suits on the air for ages so we’re not altogether worried over its future from that perspective … especially since Markle’s exit is probably going to bring even more viewers over to the show for the final episodes.
