Why Gotham season 4 doesn’t need Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn

We will admit that there absolutely was a time in which we thought it was essential that Gotham brought in Harley Quinn as a major part of the series. She’s a great character in Batman: The Animated Series, and we also feel like some of the comics over the past few years have done some interesting things with her.

Yet, over time — and especially this year — we’ve started to lose interest in the idea of seeing the character on the show. There have been teasers about possible appearances in the past, but for one reason or another the producers have ultimately went in different directions. We’re glad in the end that they have, and there are a number of different reasons why they don’t need to consider her again.

1. Harley Quinn over-saturation – One of the things that was cool about Harley ten or so years ago was that she was more underground and wasn’t in any of the movies. However, now she’s got Suicide Squad, all of the recent Batman video games, and there are approximately 80 different people dressed as Harley at every single major comic book convention in the country. The character needs a break from the mainstream.

2. DC rights issues – DC doesn’t seem interested in having the character on TV and wants to save her for the movies. Arrow already tried to late claim to her earlier on in its series to no effect.

3. Too many similar characters already – There are absolutely elements of Barbara Kean that are fairly similar to Harley and there’s even been speculation that Lee Thompkins could become her. We also feel like Jerome and Nygma have successfully filled the void of resident psychopaths for Gotham already.

4. There’s no Joker – It was recently proclaimed that Jerome is not actually the Joker, which settles that once and for all. With that in mind, it doesn’t make since to introduce Harley without the Joker alongside her.

5. She’s still really young – While we know Gotham takes liberties from the comics all the time, we personally think that this is an instance where it’d be nice to stay closer to the material. It’s good to have some villains who are actually younger than Bruce Wayne at the time of the story.
