Could Doctor Who season 11 air on Sundays? Latest rumor
According to a new report from the Mirror out of the United Kingdom, BBC is considering moving the series to Sundays in the fall — this would free up Saturdays more for some other programming, and would keep the show from having to air earlier to accommodate Strictly Come Dancing. Yet, there are some other struggles that could come with this move, including what we consider to be a major break in tradition. One of the things that has made Doctor Who such a tradition is the fact that it routinely airs on Saturdays. You know when the series is coming on the air and it has that night, by and large, to itself. That’s especially true in America, when Saturdays are not exactly known as a big TV night other than Saturday Night Live a little bit later in the night.
While we understand the possible desire to mix things up given the new Doctor in Jodie Whittaker and also the new showrunner in Chris Chibnall, this is a twist that we wouldn’t really be on board for nearly as much as some of the others that have been constructed. Why move something when you don’t need to? We know that there has been some talk about declining Doctor Who ratings as of late, but it feels like a misnomer to say that the timeslot is the big reason why. It’s also pretty unfair to pawn that off on Peter Capaldi or Steven Moffat, either. The biggest reason, in our mind, for the drops was just fatigue. It’s more of the same thing that viewers had seen — even some of the most imaginative TV out there at times can tire people out. There needed to be a chance and this is that change. We do think that the ratings are going to be pretty impressive for Doctor Who season 11 right out of the gate. There’s going to be curiosity around Whittaker in the role. Whether or not that curiosity leads into some sort of large-scale success is something that we’ll be able to discuss a little bit further when we get closer to the end of season 11.
