Scientology Super Bowl commercial certainly takes us by surprise
Well, we certainly didn’t image that there was going to be a Scientology Super Bowl commercial at some point during the big game tonight. Why would you? It’s a controversial religion and not one that has necessarily done a lot of advertising over time.
What was somewhat interesting about the commercial that aired is that it almost represents perfectly the folks at the church trying to lean into the curb a little bit when it comes to one of the main talking points with the church: The curiosity that is all around them. They are aware that there’s an era of mystery around them and it now seems as though they are using that in order to promote their institution. There really wasn’t anything else that was explained within this commercial other than a bunch of strange stuff seemingly designed in order to ensure that people were curiosity. The Church didn’t exactly rely on anything else, including some of their celebrity members, to prove a point.
Is this going to actually convert some more people into members of the Church? We’re not sure, but at the same time we figure that they will at least get some more Google searches.
Ultimately, the best thing that Scientology could do in this preview is just do everything within their power to direct people over to their official website rather than anywhere else — including Google. They can present the narrative that they see fit in order to achieve whatever it is that they want to achieve. The Church has dealt with some worse-than-usual press as of late, including the Leah Remini series Scientology and the Aftermath that has aired for a couple of seasons.
While it may not be the easiest to remember, this is actually not the first time that Scientology has aired a commercial during the Super Bowl. They just air them so rarely that it comes as a surprise almost every time.
