Wendy’s Super Bowl commercial 2018 shades McDonald’s big-time
Today, we’re focusing mostly on Wendy’s a company that used to be known for Dave Thomas. Then, they had the redhead actress for a while. Now, it seems to be that their new strategy is to just use their super-popular Twitter account as a blueprint for everything else that they’re trying to do. We can’t exactly say that we blame them, mostly because of the fact that people love snark in 2018.
The premise – It’s really simple: In this ad Wendy’s goes after McDonald’s for flash-freezing their burger patties. Meanwhile, Wendy’s never does that and this is why their burgers make all the difference.
Brand recognition -Wendy’s brand is all over the commercial, though it is somewhat surprising that they would directly risk naming a competitor as much as they do, even if it’s in an unfavorable light. While we think there may be some out there who care which burgers are fresh and which aren’t, neither are all that good for you. Therefore, we really just think it’s about taste as opposed to who has the freshest meat.

Creativity – The main reason it’s creative is just because of the fact that we’re talking about Wendy’s trying to be a savage in their commercial towards a company they routinely mock on social media. The actual “fresh, not frozen” part of their messaging has been there for years.
Our overall grade – B. Wendy’s Super Bowl commercial is a nice reminder of who they are and why they are better in theory than McDonald’s. Yet, we don’t think that they do all that great of a job at really anything other than throwing a little shade. If they had wanted a truly classic commercial, they should have went harder and bolder here.
