Should Alec Baldwin return to Saturday Night Live as Donald Trump tonight?

Alec Baldwin return

Will Alec Baldwin return to Saturday Night Live this weekend? It’s an interesting question, largely because we are entering one of our largest droughts without him since he first began playing Donald Trump on the NBC series. The past few weeks SNL has talked about other political topics, but did so without actually featuring Trump in the flesh. Take, for example, the return of Will Ferrell as George W. Bush last week.

It’s our personal opinion that there can be too much of Trump, and with that SNL keeping Baldwin off the show for a while may end up being the smartest thing that they can do. It makes viewers actually start to miss the character again, and we were coming to a point where seeing him was starting to be no longer interesting.

In comedy, one of the basic tenants of it should be to find a way to make people laugh in a way that they haven’t before — or, at least give them a break somewhere in between from the monotony. We’ve seen Ferrell’s Bush countless times over the years, but the reason it worked last week is because it had been a while since we’ve seen him. We’ve seen SO much of Baldwin as Trump now that there is no longer anything fresh about the impression.

So, now could be the right time to bring Baldwin back so Trump can talk about the Nunes memo and some other highlights from the week. If not, we’re more than fine if the writers come up with some other unique take on what’s going on in the news.

As for Natalie Portman…

She is hosting the show tonight alongside musical guest Dua Lipa, and you can see her latest promo alongside Pete Davidson. This is your typical SNL promo, but we still love it just because there’s another great Pete – Staten Island joke thrown in there.

Also, Portman is an extremely underrated SNL host who, inexplicably, hasn’t come back in a long time. Her rap with Andy Samberg (that’s how long ago she appeared as a host!) remains one of the funniest pre-tapes that we’ve seen. Maybe it doesn’t have a lot of re-watch value because you know the joke is coming, but it was pure magic watching it for the first time.
