Vikings season 6: See Katheryn Winnick filming as director
If you look below, you can see via Katheryn Winnick’s Twitter account a tiny visual tease of season 6, plus also her and the team rolling cameras and calling action. This is obviously fun, especially since you can see how much she enjoys being in the role. It’s also significant just from the mere standpoint alone of another Vikings episode being filmed. We often get behind-the-scenes teases for the History series, but not often ones that are quite like this.
Beyond this little glimpse into Winnick’s directorial debut, one of the larger questions that we have is simply this: Will she direct herself? If that happens it’s absolutely a challenge, given that you have to balance many different hats at the same time. We’ve certainly seen it happen before (Kerry Washington just directed herself on Scandal), and we’ve got a perfectly good feeling that it will happen many times over in the future.
One of the added components to this mystery at present is whether or now Winnick’s character of Lagertha makes it to season 6. There was a certain part of the character expecting to die in the midseason finale for season 5, and now she has to find a way to move forward with Astrid gone and the message from the Seer still hanging over her head. We don’t foresee trying to deal with that mystery becoming any easier as the series progresses forward.

Vikings season 6 is likely to either premiere in late 2018 or early 2019, depending on how History wants to scale their remaining episodes. It’s very well possible that Winnick’s episode could end up airing a full year later than when the series originally filmed. For now, we look forward to her sharing more updates — while hopefully also getting a few small teases here and there regarding how the sixth season is going to look.
