Grey’s Anatomy season 14 spoilers: Candis Cayne to appear in significant arc

Candis Cayne

Grey’s Anatomy season 14 is bringing on board Candis Cayne for a guest spot and based on some early reports, all indications are that she will have a significant role in the story coming up.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cayne is going to be appearing in a significant guest arc coming up on the show as a transgender patient who arrives at the hospital for a groundbreaking vaginoplasty surgery. This is a story that is inspired in part on the real-life story of Hayley Anthony, a transgender woman who assisted with Jess Ting, the director of surgery at the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai, to create a revolutionary procedure for this sort of surgery.

In a statement, show executive producer Krista Vernoff had the following to say about coming up with this story for the show:

“[The surgery] revolutionizes the making of a vagina and we thought that was a really cool story and Candis is playing a character inspired by something we read.”

Grey’s Anatomy has a long history of basing stories off of real-life events and movements. Just on this past episode, the series chose to take on the powerful story of unnecessary police brutality after an unarmed black teen was shot by a police officer. These cases help to paint a picture of the real world, and some of the struggles that many patients and doctors go through. (This season has already introduced a transgender doctor, played by Alex Blue Davis. What’s significant about his character Dr. Casey Parker is that being transgender is just one tiny piece of who he is as a person.)

Cayne is best known for her work on Transparent, but you may also know her from her appearances on the E! docuseries I Am Cait. You can expect her arc on the other side of the Olympic Games.
