Could Gotham season 5, The Orville season 2 be impacted by Fox – NFL deal?
The net deal that Fox has signed for the show effectively means that we’re going to be seeing two fewer hours of programming in the fall, which is in turn troublesome news for a series like Gotham which, entering season 5, would lose many of the weeks of programming that it typically has. Over the course of the past several years, we’ve seen the series air ten or more episodes through the fall. Now, it wouldn’t have that said opportunity anymore. The series would be effectively shoved off until midseason, if it even returns at all.
The big thing to remember here is that Gotham season 5 is not even officially ordered yet, and it’s possible that the fewer total of programming hours could be detrimental to its renewal. Fox already has some other shows such as The Gifted and The Orville (which is also going to be displaced) that are coming back — 911 was also recently renewed and shows like Empire and STAR are both safe bets. Lucifer and Lethal Weapon are to a certain extent on the bubble alongside Gotham, and we could see things going either way for these shows. All three have some international appeal, but we would be surprised if they all made it to the air for another season.
There is some time for Fox to make some of these decisions; specifically, we would shift our to the end of May, which is when the network will probably have a better idea of things. All three of the “bubble shows” we mentioned still have time to sink or swim.
On another note
Remember all of the NFL players who complained about what Thursday Night Football does to their bodies, and some of the research that has been done about player safety? Well, the league signing a five-year deal with Fox to broadcast more Thursday-night games throws most of that into the toilet. The NFL is all about the moolah.
