Keep or Cancel: Should Happy! season 2 happen on Syfy?
Before we do anything else, we should go ahead and start with this: The odds of a Happy! season 2 taking place should be high, if for no other reason than the originality of the series alone. This is a show that really pushes the envelope, at times even to shocking levels. It takes risks that few other shows would want to try, and it does deserve some sort of credit for that. Is it a show for everyone? No, but it’s also not trying to be.
In terms of the ratings, we also do think that Happy! is charting in a way that, at least right now, networks executives have to be feeling pretty good about. The series is averaging a 0.2 rating and over 700,000 million viewers, which puts it slightly above some of their other series including Killjoys, Wynonna Earp, and Van Helsing in the ratings. We do understand that this is a show that also probably demands higher ratings given that you’ve got a big star in Christopher Meloni and some rather extensive CGI work, but this isn’t bad for a series that is relatively still unknown to many people that are out there.
Beyond the fact that the show is just creatively bonkers and you really should want something like this on the air, one of the easiest reasons to want to renew Happy! for more is simply from a vantage point of potential. This feels like the sort of show that could find a huge streaming audience after the fact and take on another life of its own. It needs some more exposure, but it can get that over the next eight or nine months before a possible season 2 could premiere. We don’t think that there’s anything really stopping Happy! from being the sort of show that runs for at least three or four seasons.
Ultimately, the ball here is going to be in Syfy’s court; yet, given that the ratings for Happy! from week 2 onward have been really solid, we’ve got every reason to think that it will get another chance. The only reason they could consider canceling it is that it, for whatever reason, isn’t meeting whatever sort of behind-the-scenes expectations that they had. We just can’t imagine that when it’s comparing well to many other original series and has room for growth they would be thinking of not renewing it for one more go.
