Jean-Claude Van Johnson canceled at Amazon alongside One Mississippi, others
According to a report from Variety, these three shows have all been canceled in the midst of what is a pretty significant changing of the guard at Amazon in the wake of former programming head Roy Price’s departure. These three shows were all developed by Price, and the thinking now seems to be to shift more towards series that are bigger and have broader appeal.
What we’re seeing with Amazon at the moment is a thirst by them to become a little more like Netflix and offer up huge series that will generate awards-show nominations and also big ratings. We imagine that a part of this could be due to feeling like they’re in last place among the three major streaming providers in notoriety. Netflix has been getting awards-show love for years, while Hulu has cleaned up as of late with the success of The Handmaid’s Tale. We’re definitely getting the sense that Amazon wants to go big with their upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series in development, and more will probably be coming after this.
We have a feeling that of the shows canceled, we’re going to be especially missing Jean-Claude Van Johnson for quite a while. After all, this is a series that is bringing a lot of great stuff to the table creatively, especially when it comes to riffing off of the image of one of Hollywood’s most-famous action stars. We wish that there were more series out there quite like this, but sometimes networks and streaming services have other things at play.
Ultimately, it’s just unfortunately that a big creative change at Amazon seems to be a factor in these shows ending more so than anything else. In the case of Jean-Claude Van Johnson, it hasn’t even been in the marketplace all that long.
