After NAACP wins, can Power get more awards love?
Let’s take a quick look at some of the overall awards that the Omari Hardwick series managed to win: Drama Series, Best Actor (for Omari Hardwick), and Supporting actress (for Naturi Naughton). It was one of the most-celebrated shows of the night, and for good reason — Power is one of the best-reviewed shows out there on the air, it features great performances, and it is daring in a way that very few others are.
Now, this brings us to one of the most baffling things about the series: Why isn’t it getting more love elsewhere? Is it too gritty, too mainstream, or are voters really watching it? Maybe it’s all three, but one of the things that we’ve come to learn about voters sometimes is that they all have a tendency to follow trends. With Power, there just hasn’t been that trend, and performers just aren’t getting talked about in the way that they should be.
What we hope that these awards signify is this: A renewed focus on Power throughout this coming summer and some more awards promotion to go along with it. One of the challenges that it faces with the Emmys is simply one of timing — it will be eligible this year for season 4 airing this past summer. Power season 5 is going to be the one that is eligible at the Golden Globes a little bit later this year. It’s a little early to know just how good it will be, but for now, we’re certainly optimistic given the cliffhanger. Remember that season 4 ended with Tasha (Naughton) taking the fall for Ray Ray’s death over her son Tariq. As a result of that, she’s gearing up for the fight for her life. Meanwhile, Ghost is trying to rebuild his life, but the machinations/manipulations of Tate are going to make that more than a little bit difficult.
Do you think that Power season 5 will be a season where things change for the show’s awards consideration? Be sure to share in the comments!
