Saturday Night Live cold open: Bill Murray as Steve Bannon in a Morning Joe spoof

Dave Chappelle

There are absolutely some times in which Saturday Night Live cold opens can be very predictable. This week is one of these said times. How does the show not reference Donald Trump and Haiti right away? It feels almost like a total no-brainer to be able to bring out Alec Baldwin and take on some of what the President said about this country plus much of the African continent.

Of course, the question that we really had going into the episode was this: How in the world is SNL going to be able to mock the incident without saying the word in question? While CNN and other news networks went with “s–thole,” network television is often a little different. (Granted, we’ve certainly heard plenty of other cursing on SNL over the years, not all of it intentional.)

Well, let’s just say that these were our expectations for tonight. Reality was somewhat different.

The actual cold open – Well, this was a surprise! There was no Donald Trump in the opening minutes. Instead, we had Morning Joe segment … one that was of course about Donald Trump and Haiti. We are guessing that Baldwin was not available to do tonight’s episode since we know he would have a field day with this one.

While we were a bit disappointed to see no Baldwin, we did very much appreciate some of what the writers brought to the table. Also, the Morning Joe spoof is continuously funny with the way that the show plays Joe and Mika all over each other. Also, who saw some of the cameos coming? Bringing on Fred Armisen as Micheal Wolff (the two actually look alike! was genius. Also, apparently Bill Murray played a strange, disoriented, and completely crazy Steve Bannon. We’re not sure Bill has anything in common with Bannon. This wasn’t even an impression! Yet we don’t care. If the show was to ever unmask Bannon, having it be Bill Murray is perfect way to go.

This was a heck of an introduction to the show, and if there was one thing that topped it off, it was Leslie Jones as Oprah Winfrey in the closing moments.
