TV Underdogs: How The Big Bang Theory could use more Bert Kibbler

Bert Kibbler

One of the great things about The Big Bang Theory is that over the past several years, they have developed such a great stable of familiar faces. Some of them you see almost every episode, whereas others manage to pop in every now and then. Burt Kibbler, played by Brian Posehn, is a little more of the latter. He’s been in a handful of episodes to date and we imagine that there are going to be some more coming up.

What Bert brings onto the show is a goofy energy, and then also a little bit of lovable sad-sack demeanor. While he has some things in common with fellow recurring character Stuart (Kevin Sussman), at the same time he fills a very different role. Bert is one of the few characters on the show who is closer to Amy than almost anyone else, and he often finds himself the target of Sheldon’s ire for many reasons — whether it be his height, his profession, or just the fact that he spends time with Amy and there’s a part of him that is envious of that.

For the most part, Bert tends to take most of what is coming to him in stride, but what if he didn’t? Will we get a chance to see what happens when you keep needling Bert, or is that a little bit tough since we’re talking about a comedy series? He’s mostly used as a source of comic relief and a chance for the show to feature a different character who is successful, but still struggling in some elements of his social life. He’s a taller, balder version of Leonard — someone who is interested in having more in his life than he does, but is struggling to figure it out. He’s socially awkward, but not so much so that he constantly condescends or is unable to speak to women.

What would CarterMatt like to see more of?

Think in terms of where Bert comes from, the sort of work that he actually does, and how he lets off steam over Sheldon being angry at him. We basically want to see him where he isn’t so settled, but wants more than what he has.

In reality, our Big Bang Theory dream is for a Bert / Stuart spin-off at some point at the end of the series where these two characters get their own moment in the sun. Posehn and Sussman are easily gifted-enough performers to lead their own show, and it could capture the soul of the original while still doing something new. Ironically, this would feel more like a Big Bang Theory spin-off than Young Sheldon, mostly because that show is set so far in the past and features a different camera structure. It may be Sheldon’s story, but it also does feel very different.
