The Orville season 2 premiere coming later than expected
Despite being renewed already for a second season, MacFarlane suggested to TV Guide in a new interview that there’s “too much” to do in order to guarantee that the second season would be on the air in the fall. It’s possible that MacFarlane was alluding to the significant pre and post-production process needed in order to get this show off of the ground. Or, it’s possible that he was referring in some way to his own schedule producing and doing a lot of other projects.
Seth also confirmed that it’s looking as though there could be around 14 episodes coming up (two more than the first season), mostly because he’d “rather do fewer episodes and have them be better content-wise than do [the increasingly less-typical] 22 and have them be filler.” We do agree with that, especially since the majority of The Orville season 1 episodes were compact and told some really fun, entertaining stories. We’ve always had a lot of belief that this was a great show, but never were altogether thrilled with Fox trying to present it in the early days as something that it wasn’t. This is a show with some funny moments, but they never quite grasped fully that there was such an earnest heart at the center of the show. There was so much more that could’ve been done there.
In general, though The Orville enters season 2 as somewhat of a strange phenomenon. While panned by the majority of critics coming out of its launch, the viewers of the show defied them and found something they really loved. It probably has one of the most-loyal followings of any of the new series to premiere this past fall, save for maybe The Good Doctor over on ABC.
Update: MacFarlane has now suggested that the show will return in 2018, after all. Rejoice!

It will be worth the wait, of course, but it will be difficult. Definitely my favourite new show this year, so I can’t wait to see more. On the other hand, I know shows like this with a lot of post-production work can take considerably longer to complete than many, so I’d rather wait and have it done right.
