The Bachelor spotlight: Meet Marikh Mathias, restaurant owner and model

In terms of diversity it’s cool to have Marikh Mathias on The Bachelor — this is a show that still has a lot of work to do in that department.

Marikh is also someone who could be presented in about a billion different ways on The Bachelor, since she’s got a lot going on for someone who is only 27 years old. She’s done a reasonable amount of modeling (her Instagram is proof of that), but her job on her bio is restaurant owner and her mother is a chef. If The Bachelor ever wants to do a challenge inspired by Top Chef, there’s a pretty good chance that Marikh wins it and gets some more alone time with Arie Luyendyk Jr. on the other side of it. She could be a great contestant this season! She has a point of view that’s a little bit different, and given that she hails from Salt Lake City we don’t necessarily think that she’s just going to be there to immediately get fame, move to Los Angeles, and completely change her personality. It does happen with the show from time to time, but we don’t think it’ll happen here.

Here’s where Marikh gets into trouble, as per her bio: “I enjoy being mysterious. People always make incorrect assumptions about me and I’d rather they not have me confirm those.” While she makes somewhat of a point here, being mysterious never works all that well on this show. You’ve got guys leading the show who often can’t be bothered to get to know you longer than a few soundbites — at times, they just don’t have time to do more than that. You have to be open and honest right away to have a chance.

Can you be mysterious and last a few weeks? Sure, but typically we end up seeing guys tire of that on the show extremely quickly.

Will Arie Luyendyk Jr. like her? – We hope so, just because it’d be great to have a contestant with Marikh’s background on the show for a while and it’d make for a great hometown date. We will say this — she’s got some life experience (which is good), and typically contestants in their late twenties have a great chance of making it far or even winning.
