Sherlock season 5 renewal not on the table — at least for right now
So, yeah … it’s a really long process. It’s made even longer by what Mark Gatiss had to say about the show’s future while promoting the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special on Lorraine recently:
“We deliberately left it in a happy place where we could go back … But we have no plans at the moment.”
The easiest way to translate some of Gatiss’ comments here is that there are no real talks about bringing the show back at the moment, even though a great deal of time has passed already since the arrival of Sherlock season 4 early this year. There’s probably going to be another year or so before discussion really gets going, if not longer. Cumberbatch is fully immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the moment, among other things; meanwhile, Gatiss also has a number of projects in the works.
When the stars align, they will. There’s little reason to imagine that things are going to shut down with this series — with the ratings it got for season 4, why would anyone even want that? They wouldn’t. It’s that simple.
