Grey’s Anatomy season 14 debate: Should Jo and Alex get engaged by finale?
If you follow the ABC series as closely as we do here at CarterMatt then you know that they have already been very close to getting to this place in their relationship before. Were it not for a certain incident revolving Andrew DeLuca, there’s a good chance that they would already be married at this point. Life gets in the way sometimes, but the important thing is that many elevator rides later (how many important scenes have involved Jo and elevators?), these two now seem to be working towards an engagement again. They are officially together and, to go along with that, seem to be conquering many of the roadblocks that in their way.
For Jo though, there is still a rather significant roadblock right ahead of her … and it’s one that also could be rather traumatic for her. We’re speaking here of course about Dr. Paul Stadler, her abusive ex-husband and someone who was so horrible that he caused her to move and assume another identity. Making the decision to divorce him should be a big step forward, but there’s still the issue of him showing up at the hospital.
If Jo and Alex can withstand that, you’ve got even more of a reason to believe that they are going to be able to emerge on the other side stronger then ever. There’s no reason not to be hopeful about their future, given that they’re both loving, passionate people who have shown what they’re willing to do for one another. The only thing that could be standing in their way on the other side of the Paul crisis is the fact that on Shonda Rhimes series, happiness is very rarely guaranteed. It’s very possible that something else comes up that causes the relationship to fall apart once again.
From our perspective though, we really don’t want to see that happen. It feels like it’s time, and that these characters have gone through enough suffering already.
