Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Ellen Pompeo directing another episode
According to a new report coming in from TVLine, Pompeo will find herself cruising back into the director’s chair for an upcoming episode set to air this spring. She will start filming in January and signs point to it being a big episode for Alex Karev. The story could include flashbacks to when the character was a teenager, struggling with what was a very difficult childhood. If this plan sticks, then the show will bring in an actor to play Younger Alex, and this would make perfect sense for Pompeo’s second episode as director. If you are helming an episode you often don’t want to have a role on it that will demand a high percentage of your time. You need that time to work your magic behind the camera and then piece everything together behind the scenes. We’ve always praised actors that can take on directing and acting at the same time since both jobs require an incredible amount of concentration to make it just right. Doing both at the same time could easily be a disaster for many.
Pompeo first directed Grey’s Anatomy last season; with that, we’re starting to wonder if this is a role she is considering taking on once per season for the remainder of the show’s run. She is definitely not the first cast member to direct episodes, as we’ve seen this many times from people like Chandra Wilson and Kevin McKidd. It’s a chance to flex some other muscles and expand their skill set. Some actors have even taken advantage of opportunities to go and direct some other shows elsewhere. Take, for example, Wilson taking on a directing gig over on The Fosters.
After this current winter hiatus Grey’s Anatomy will return with new episodes in January. Rest assured, we’ll have more news on some of these episodes before we get to the new year, so be sure to check back with us for more scoop.
