The Good Doctor winter finale: Shaun meets his therapist
In the new sneak peek that you can see below (via Entertainment Weekly), Freddie Highmore’s character has a chance to meet his new therapist for the first time. Dr. Glassman seems convinced that he will help him adjust to day-to-day life better, and while we agree with him that it’s possible, there’s a very clear distinction between something being possible on paper and this same something actually coming to fruition.
For starters, Shaun has to be completely open to the idea of having therapy and he’s made it more than clear that he’s not. He struggles to understand why he needs someone like a therapist and why they could help him. It’s going to be an adjustment for him — for us, it should make for some compelling drama. Shaun is a character who understands that he has some things that need to be worked through, but also is unable to fully accept some of what needs to be done in order to make that happen. This could either be a stepping stone in the right direction or an enormous roadblock depending on what direction the writers choose to take with this story. What we find ourselves hoping for is that Shaun can adapt. It’s going to be up to him as to whether or not this is success.
Following this episode, the thing we do need to accept as viewers is that there will be no resolution for this story for a while. The Good Doctor is entering its first lengthy hiatus; when you consider the fantastic viewership for the show to date, we hope that it gets some chances to air after The Bachelor so that it can take advantage of some of its audience and keep the momentum going.
