Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? What’s next

Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? If you missed last week’s episode we have some bad news…

Unfortunately, this past episode, which featured an assortment of Donald Trump highlights alongside an amusing post-credits sequence in which Tom Hanks interacted with some of Oliver’s wax Presidents, is now on hiatus. That was the finale, and new episodes are going to be starting back in 2018. This is the same schedule that the show went on last year.

For those of you complaining as to why Oliver doesn’t do more shows than he does, especially since many late-night comedy shows do four or five shows a week throughout the year, think about this: It makes more sense to compare Last Week Tonight to a scripted comedy series than a traditional talk show. There are no interview segments on this show or quick monologues. Everything is carefully planned out from Oliver’s desk, whether it be the videos, the graphics, or the pattern of the jokes. Oliver did 30 episodes of this show this year, which is the same as the year before. This is already six more episodes than the standard scripted comedy. That’s a lot of episodes a year! It takes a lot of time to research some of these subjects and plan everything out — for the occasional field pieces and fake trailers and taped pieces the show does, those also take time.

Unfortunately for Oliver, we have a feeling that the news is not going to be taking any time off while he is gone and things will remain every bit as insane as they were during the time in which he was around. For the next few weeks, just try to keep calm and carry on — that’s the sort of overused British phrase that we have a feeling Oliver hates, and therefore he would probably appreciate that we are using it ironically here.

One thing that will be interesting to see? If the network goes with this same key art for the new year or opts for one that actually showcases all of Oliver’s face for a change! They’ve had this one ever since the start of the year, which does make a degree of sense given that there is a lot for people to want to hide from in 2017.
