Why the Absentia US premiere date should be in January

Absentia US premiere date

We’ve officially cleared the first step in knowing what the future of Absentia is going to be — the series, starring Stana Katic and Patrick Heusinger, is heading to Amazon! We’re very happy that this is ending up being the home for the show — it’s still a little bit of a surprise (this wasn’t one that we really had on our radar), but it’s a happy surprise. This is a home that will adequately support the show and to go along with that, it should add some subscribers to the service who were not there previously.

Now, let’s shift to the next inevitable question that is going to come as a result of this: What should the Absentia US premiere date? For now, the only thing confirmed is that new episodes are going to air in 2018. CarterMatt’s response to that is pretty simple: Start streaming them sooner rather than later!

Given that this is Amazon we’re talking about here, this is not a streaming provider beholden in some way to such things as scheduling limitations. All they have to worry about is finding the right time to put episodes out there … and what better time than as soon as possible?

For one, by the time season 1 launches in the new year, (no matter when it is), viewers in some parts of the world will have had an opportunity already to watch the entire first season. The longer that you wait, the larger the risk that someone online decides to spoil the fun for everyone. Most fans have been pretty cool about this sort of thing, but we know that one bad apple can ultimately spoil the bunch.

January is the perfect time to launch the show when you stop and consider the fact that February is extremely crowded — you don’t want to throw Absentia online the same month as the Super Bowl, the Oscars, the Grammys, Valentine’s Day, the Olympics and a wide array of new episodes of other shows. It’s a wintry show in some ways and it only makes sense to premiere in the winter. January is ideal for that — it’s the perfect binge show while someone is sipping a cup of hot cocoa, and trying to stay warm amidst the sub-zero temperatures outside. This is a show that relies (in some ways) on viewers being around to watch it and there is no better time to make that happen than when they have little incentive to do anything outside.

Our suggestion for Amazon is to make the show a January tradition, similar in part to Downton Abbey back when it was on the air. With the streaming provider’s tendency to stream all episodes at once it’s never going to premiere at the same time in America as it does overseas; nonetheless, this at least keeps the wait from being entirely agonizing and your US audience will at least know when they can look for the show to come back.
