Howards End episode 2: What’s next for Hayley Atwell series? Latest ratings
After all, it does appear as though the British network has found what could end up being one of their biggest hits in a rather long time — which is a shame for them only because this series, (starring Hayley Atwell as Margaret Schlegel) is only meant to be a four-part series. It generated (per Deadline) almost seven million viewers in its debut, which is one of the best ratings for a new series this year on the network. It even tops out Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling, the well-received adaptation of the Robert Galbraith novels. (For those unaware Galbraith is a pen name for J.K. Rowling, and she certainly courts many viewers from all over the world.)
What made Howards End so successful right out of the gate? A big part of that may be the beloved source material from E.M. Forster, coupled with a tale that is easy to describe — two sisters looking for love and to define their future during a complicated point in history. In general, period dramas are enormously popular in Britain, and having an actress of Atwell’s caliber proved to be the icing on the cake. This series launch is substantially more notable than the performance of her two recent shows in America — Conviction and Agent Carter.

As 1907 dawns, the Schlegels also face seismic changes to their world as they are given an eviction date for their house, which is due to be demolished and replaced by luxury flats.
When Jacky Bast appears on their doorstep the Schlegel sisters take up the cause of her husband, with unintended consequences.
For those wondering Starz owns the U.S. broadcasting rights to the series, and presumably it will premiere at some point next year. We know that they do have a fairly competitive programming landscape at the moment, but once they see ratings like this, that may be more of an incentive to get Howards End on the air as soon as they possibly can.
