ABC gives The Mayor more scripts; Kevin (Probably) Saves the World more episodes
Let’s start here with The Mayor an ABC series we recently advocated for as one of the best comedies of the season. According to a new report coming in right now courtesy of Deadline, the series featuring the likes of Brandon Michael Hall and Lea Michele has three more episodes tacked on to its season 1 order. What this means effectively is that the show may end up with sixteen episodes this season, though that is not a guarantee. The studio will take a look at some of these installments and figure out precisely what they want to do from there.
The shame here is that The Mayor should be a smash hit and shouldn’t be in this position. So, why is it? The easy answer there is that it probably had something to do with scheduling. Tuesdays just haven’t been a good night for ABC in some time, and despite a decent lead-in from black-ish, this is still a show airing opposite This Is Us. It’s very hard to convince people to watch a comedy live in 2017. It’s even harder to convince them to watch one when they already have appointment-viewing with something else.
As for Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, the news is a little bit better. The Jason Ritter series has three more episodes in total, which means that its first season will be at least sixteen installments. ABC seems to be high on the show, but it has a terrible time slot (Tuesdays at 10:00) that have killed a number of different shows over the years. In retrospect, the network canceled Body of Proof far too early since pretty much every show they’ve stuck in this time slot since has completely sunk like a stone.
The long-term fate on both of these shows is going to be revealed in the spring prior to ABC’s upfront presentation. We’re not super-optimistic on either for the time being, though Kevin (Probably) Saves the World probably has a slight edge.
What do you think about The Mayor and Kevin (Probably) Saves the World having more of a future?

I like Kevin because of Jason Ritter. The Mayor is so so.
