Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 7 review: The Sandra Oh – Katherine Heigl debate
Now that we’ve made it through Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 7, and let’s start off by praising the show for making it to 300 episodes! That is a tremendous achievement, rare for any show, and it should be celebrated immensely.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t change our feeling that this 300th episode was one of the bigger letdowns of the season — at least through the first forty-five minutes or so. Whenever Grey’s Anatomy does these event episodes, whether it be milestone hours, musicals, or sliding-door “what if” stories, they are often hit or miss.
This time around, the central conceit was a miss: Meredith and Alex having to work on patients who harbored an uncanny physical resemblance to Cristina, George, and Izzie. This caused these two characters (plus Webber and Bailey) to reminisce over how they felt about the other original interns on the show — the idea of reflection is important for these characters every now and then, especially this far into the show’s run, but the execution did fit quite right.
In seeing these characters, what Grey’s Anatomy did more so than anything else was remind us of just how much we missed some of the original cast members — we became so distracted as to why TR Knight, Katherine Heigl, and Sandra Oh weren’t there that it took away from the rest of the story. There were some interesting things happening — especially with Owen and Amelia trying to move forward — but this episode almost became overwhelmed by the past.
Things started to become a bit more interesting at around the 50-minute mark when Alex passed along his personal “update” of Izzie — that she is apparently married and has three kids and still works as a surgeon. It may not be real, but that’s what he wants to believe. Maybe that’s why the show isn’t bringing her back, but it still doesn’t resolve what we said already.
Things to know
Bailey finally knows the truth about Ben deciding to become a firefighter. Also, Meredith did receive a Harper Avery Award — she didn’t leave the hospital in order to receive it, and Jackson accepted it on her behalf. His speech was rather lovely, and included callbacks to everyone from Lexie to Derek.
Also, Sofia returned to Arizona for the first time in a while, and she had a tough time bonding with her at first — that was understandable given how she’s been away for a while. We also had a chance to learn more about Andrew’s history with one of the new interns. They knew they were bad for each other — so yep, they basically went ahead and hooked up anyway.
The one thing that was funny about the doppelganger story was Owen saying that he didn’t think the new Cristina looked like her.
CarterMatt Verdict
The Grey’s Anatomy 300th episode proved to be very much a thing of beauty in the final ten minutes, but we wish we had gotten there sooner or used a different convention to tell the stories of the past other than lookalikes.
This episode was entertaining enough in the end — there were some sweet nostalgic moments. We just feel like one of the central conventions kept it from being as great as it could’ve been.
