Outlander season 4: The story of putting down roots — more ratings figures

What is the theme going to be for Outlander season 4? It’s difficult to put down into just a few words, but finding a home is near the top of the list.

As exciting as the first three seasons (so far) have been for the characters of Jamie and Claire Fraser (played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe), they’ve also been very stressful for them. They’re constantly on the move! They traversed across Scotland, then to France, then back to Scotland. Claire went back to America, and during her absence Jamie went from capture to Lallybroch to prison to Helwater to eventually Lallybroch again and Edinburgh. Together, they have already traveled from Edinburgh to Lallybroch and they are about to embark on a journey to the West Indies. They have no real home, no place to put down roots and establish themselves. There’s a part in everyone that wants to explore the world, but for most of us this eventually washes away and you just want to find a home and get a bit of stability.

For Jamie and Claire, they are eventually going to find that in season 4 in North Carolina. Scotland is serving as the filming location, and for the first time in years the show will be a little bit more sedentary. This is something that executive producer Matthew B. Roberts teased to Entertainment Weekly as a part of their new cover story:

“They never plant their feet. Now they’re getting to that place that they can call home. But the meaning of home is different for people. That’s what we will dig into in season four.”

While we’ve enjoyed the ever-changing structure and setting of the past three seasons here at CarterMatt, there is something exciting about seeing the show change and try something new. If you do love Outlander for its scope, some of that will still be there. It may just manifest itself in some different ways.

More ratings figures

We’ve been promising for weeks comprehensive ratings figures that include DVR ratings, streams, and much more. While we’re still in the middle of the season (and we therefore don’t consider these final), the aforementioned site reports that there are 5.7 million viewers on average checking out the show. That is more than three times the live viewership of the show, not that this is much of a surprise given that there are so many different ways viewers watch TV these days.

This consolidated viewing figure is enough to make Outlander the #2 show on Starz; Power is their other consistent ratings titan.
