Outlander season 3 episode 9 photo analysis: Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe on the high seas!
There are a number of new photos enclosed within this CarterMatt article from Sunday night’s new episode, which will be, (both in terms of style and substance) very different from some others released to date. For starters, this episode was by and large filmed outside of Europe! We’re heading off (production-wise) to South Africa, where most of the footage at sea was filmed. This is the same set that was used for Black Sails, and some of the production people down there understand just how to make these scenes look authentic. The photo above exemplifies perfectly that Jamie and Claire’s romance does seem to be in good standing aboard the ship, which is important given that they have certainly gone through quite a bit in the past few episodes since reuniting. While it seemed that Claire at one point was doubting her decision to go back in time, she now appears grateful to have made the decision to stay.
That’s a good decision for Claire to have made given that it doesn’t quite look like she’ll have a chance to return to the 20th century anytime soon even if she wanted to. Claire and Jamie are chasing a captured Young Ian across the high seas, venturing about as far from Scotland (and the stones) as humanly possible. You do see some photos (below) that represent some element of concern, but then also some that are almost happy and idealized. We suppose that this may be a reflection of how Claire and Jamie actually feel while they are embarking on this journey — there are going to be some high highs and low lows. That’s expected when you’re dealing with the elements, issues from the past, and also a general lack of an escape. There’s no real place on the ship for quiet reflection if you want it.

Is this the Mr. Willoughby spotlight?
Earlier this season we wrote about how Outlander has a tremendous opportunity to make this character a standout, and one that could bring many different things to the series that aren’t necessarily in the books. These two photos below do suggest that Gary Young is set for one of his biggest episodes yet and in turn, we will learn more about the show’s presentation of this character.
Personally, we love the idea of he and Claire forming a tight bond from their shared status as others in the world. Neither one of them have the same grasp on the world, and while Claire may be able to outwardly blend in easier, Willoughby may actually be more accustomed to interacting with these surroundings.
