Could the Major Crimes season 6 ratings help season 7 odds?
For the time being, the biggest thing we have to consider is this: The odds of Major Crimes finding another home are slim. Very slim. We want to be optimistic, but we also recognize that there’s a difference between optimism and false hope. We absolutely don’t want to start handing out the latter, but we do wonder what happens in the event that Major Crimes impresses with better ratings in season 6 than anyone anticipated it would draw? Would that be enough to somehow turn the tide in the show’s favor?
Right now, what we know is this: Over season 5, the series averaged (as a whole) a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.2 million viewers. When you look across the board on cable in particular, this numbers aren’t bad — the total viewer count is actually pretty impressive and better than a few shows out there on the Big Four networks. We feel like we’ve already talked about dubious TNT decisions here to death so we don’t want to get into that again – other than saying that in premiering Major Crimes at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday night TNT isn’t really doing the show any favors.
Now when it comes to what could happen from here with Major Crimes, what we wonder is this: What if the show averages a 0.5 rating, or manages to bring in either the same or more viewers for its final season? Could that cause a change and have some new players coming to the table to pick up the show up? We do think interesting things could happen if the ratings stay about even or if they rise, mostly because that’s a rare feat for any show these days — especially a cable show this far into its run.
So if you love this show our advice is this: Watch Major Crimes live and make sure some of your friends and family do so as well — with this season being more about arcs than individual episodes we could see it being appealing to younger people out there who do love the whole binge-watching model and having a story to follow every week.

Guys, love the article, BUT you have the wrong time! Major Crimes comes on at 9ET/8CT. The repeat is on at 10 ET/9CT. Can we get a correction? We need those live viewers at the correct time! lol BTW…thanks for the article!
Strategically thinking I don’t think they are as slim as you think they are for the following reasons:
I am hoping that TNT calling it the last season will actually help to boost it to get it onto CBS, where I am sure it will be treated better. I am reminded of the extra boost it gave R&I. It would be interesting to see if potential new homes look at “total” numbers, which even by TNT’s count have it at 10 million versus looking at just live viewing numbers. Also, the fact that it is still the #2 scripted on cable!
In my research, when CBS took on Jag, its total viewership numbers were 11.5 million ON BROADCAST. Major Crimes is at 10 million (TNT’s numbers) ON CABLE. Granted, CBS produces NCIS, BUT WB has an established relationship/partnership with CBS. Can’t forget that WB already supplies CBS with their number 1 and 2 shows.
One thing I do have to mention is that you mention the show’s age. If you study similar franchises “on the big 4”, this franchise is actually a baby. Law and Order is about to turn 30 and Jag/NCIS is almost 20. The Closer/Major Crimes is 13 with untapped spin off potential that stupidly wasn’t mined by Reilly’s TNT. Major Crimes SOB had the potential to bring in a younger demo with a TESTED spin off. I don’t think another network is going to be as short sighted as Reilly’s TNT and as evaluations are being done for potential pick up, I don’t think wherever it may land is going to give up those 10 million viewers and the opportunity for franchise expansion.
