Outlander season 3: Five characters in need of their own spin-off story
Given that we at CarterMatt love all things Outlander we just want to imagine ways to get more of it. We know that logistically it’s impossible to tell more story if you’re using the same crew — there’s only so much they can work in a year! Nonetheless, we still thought it would be a bit of fun at this point in the season to look at the characters most deserving of their own solo story and what it could be about — whether it be a full-fledged spin-off or just a limited series / brief arc. We don’t want to take away from the main story itself, but why not think about some other possibilities? (After all, we’re all about having fun celebrating this universe today — check out our article from this morning for more in that department.)
Let’s go ahead and get to some of our proposed character ideas now.
Lord John Grey – This one feels almost like cheating since Diana Gabaldon has already written many spin-off stories about him already! Still, it’d be a thrill to see some of these play out on TV and David Berry already made it clear that he’s game.
Older Fergus – Judging from what little we’ve seen from Cesar Domboy’s character already, including a fun sneak peek for Sunday’s new episode where he talks about his experiences with women, this would be rather fun addition to the world. Fergus has a bit of roguish pirate charm about him and he’s been through a lot — plus, it feels only natural that you get some Sam Heughan cameos in here.
Geillis Duncan – While we haven’t seen her so far this season, Geillis is the sort of character who really transcends chronology and the producers/writers could do so many different things with her. We’d watch her during the era of “Dragonfly in Amber,” but we’d certainly also be curious to see some more of her actions in the 18th century.
Murtagh – There’s clearly some enthusiasm we’ve got here at CarterMatt for this idea, largely because there’s unexplored territory now that wasn’t covered in the books or anywhere else. Murtagh didn’t die on the show at Culloden! With that, we’re very curious to see where he is at the time of the Print Shop scene and what he is up to. Is he in prison, or has he found a way to get out of that and start a new life? There’s obviously a reason why the show producers kept him alive and we’re absolutely curious to see precisely what that is.
Brianna – Yes, we do realize that eventually she will be roped back into the Outlander story in a big way, but we wouldn’t mind a six-episode limited series with Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin explaining what the lives of Bree and Roger are like in the aftermath of Claire heading back to the past. Sure, we’ll see a little more about that come season 4, but there’s always room for more!
Other suggestions
We toyed around with some other ideas here and there as well — a medical drama starring Joe Abernathy saving patients and overcoming racism, a deep dive into life at Lallybroch both before and after Red Jamie’s stay there, and even a scenario where we make up a member or two of the Randall family tree just to get more Tobias Menzies.

I would love to see a Lord John series. They could stray more off the books with him, but use the stories as a jumping off point. They could maybe do an 18th Century criminal procedural, with all the investigations he does in the side books. We don’t see Minnie or Percy in the main books until later, so it would be good to see them on screen, and of course Jamie could make an occasional guest appearance.

If Murtagh ends up at Fraser’s ridge or west of the colonies maybe he could meet a nice indigenous lady who is his equal to romance and marry.

I’d like to see the goings on at Castle Leogh prior to and during Jamie’s 16th year visit. Love all those characters!

We need a Duo that Would bring both Humor & Drama & a Wee bit of Adventure & Romance….And that Duo Should be Young Ian & Fergus!! Can you imagine the Trouble they’d get into? Uncle Jamie would make Cameos of course, Bailing them Out of Trouble, Girl Chasing, Get Rich Quick Schemes, Gambling, Getting in Drunken Fights…..Just think of All the Things they’d get into like all Teens & Young Men Tend to do??? Oh, the Raging Hormones & Womanizing & Sword Play, Dueling Try to Prove their Manhood! Outlander’s version of the 18th Century “The Odd Couple” (sloppy, carefree Fergus) & (Neatnick, shy Young Ian) or Better Yet, “Lethal Weapon” with (Fergus as Crazy, Daring, Womanizing Riggs character) & (Young Ian, playing overly Cautious, Nervous & Nerdy Sgt.Murtaugh!!) Uncle Jamie would Surely have his Hands Full with These 2 Scallywags!!

No spin offs….I, for one, just would not be interested (watch me get flogged now). I’ve enjoyed the principle books coming to life and that’s it for me…

Murtagh was sent to the colonies when Ardsmuir closed. My guess is that he is going to replace a book character (who was in Ardsmuir with Jamie) named Duncan Innes and everyone meets up again. I don’t want to say more than that and spoil it for non book readers. But I am 100% on board with Murtagh surviving Culloden.

Would love to see a bit of Dougal, Colum, and Ellen MacKenzie growing up, then how the brothers react to Ellen’s elopement with Brian Fraser.

Would love Murtagh and Lord John Grey. And Roger’s background before meeting Claire/Bree. Could also imagine a comedic type series focusing on Rupert & Angus (obviously from before they died!), with guest spots every now and then from the wonderful Graham McTavish as Dougal.
