Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 5 video: Beth Whitman returns (in name)

Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 5 airs on ABC Thursday night, and within that you’re going to hear a name uttered that you probably didn’t imagine you’d be hearing at any point these days: Beth. Beth Whitman, to be specific, was at one point a key part of Owen Hunt’s history — she was his former fiancee during an earlier part of his life, and over the course of this episode we should be able to understand more of not only what transpired between the two but also how Owen was when his sister was an active part of his life.

In the sneak peek below you see trouble brewing between Owen and Beth when he was unable to get leave as he’d hoped — there are some fun barbs exchanged back and forth between Owen, Megan, and Teddy, and we know that Riggs is out there, as well, even if he’s not a part of this scene. This is a very different sort of story for the show than we’ve seen before, and with that we’re excited to see things unfold. We’re also going to be going back and forth between the present and the past; this preview confirms that Amelia is going to be a part of this story in some way and that’s exciting from the sheer vantage point that this is a relationship that effectively has to start anew. She has her memories, but her behavior was largely the result of the brain tumor.

When it comes to the relationship between Owen and Beth this episode could fill in a few holes regarding what happened to the two of them. Being in the Army may have made Owen a stronger person, but it also changed him and it was a fundamental building block to his relationship going south. We could get more insight into that in this episode, while also informing us more of the tragedy revolving around his sister. The repression and the pain that he likely suffered as a result of what happened could be an unspoken but very-key component in how everything unfolded in the way that it did.

If you love the Owen character and Kevin McKidd’s performance, odds are that you are going to love this episode. We’re sure that some people out there may be bummed that some other characters aren’t featured as much, but for them we’d remind them that there are going to be plenty of other stories this season and therefore opportunities for some of their characters to get their moment in the sun.
