Wisdom of the Crowd episode 3 review: Is Carlos Ochoa dead?
We admire Jeffrey’s desire for justice; however, we’re certainly concerned about what this is going to do to him if Booth turns out to be nothing.
Meanwhile, Tommy Cavanagh found himself moonlighting for Jeffrey under the eye of his own employer. He is doing his part to show gratitude back to Jeffrey for his help in some of his cases, but before the two could do any digging there was a new case to tackle — and it was a big one.
As it turns out, Sophe was able to connect a string of unresolved murders in the greater San Francisco area in a way that made one thing shockingly clear: There could be a serial killer on the loose. Every single case had little connections to another — it wasn’t the sort of thing that would’ve been connected by anything other than a computer looking for these tiny details. The police went to work, but then another surprising detail came out: One revolving a possible victim who was actually still alive. We had a chance to see some questioning there, information-gathering, machine learning (the title of this episode), and in the end a capture. We actually think that this episode would’ve benefited a lot from there being more time in order to tell this story — there was just a lot going on in this episode as a whole.
An attack in prison
Is Ochoa is safe, then basically he is on his way now to become the show’s version of Naz from The Night Of. He was attacked and is trying to now link up with some people supposedly out to protect him.
The conclusion of this episode was Ochoa-based as Carlos found himself in a position even crazier than we saw in The Night Of — stabbed and left for dead in his cell. Is he really gone?
Meet Ryan’s brother — and did Ryan kill Mia?
We met Booth’s brother a third of the way into the episode, and we learned that he was a guy desperate to move on from the past. In putting Ryan’s face out there for the world to see, all Jeffrey was doing was opening that wound. What we did learn is more of Booth’s history at a mental institution, one that Mia worked at to help give back to others. While there a nurse was able to give him a clue — something that Ryan made during his time there.
After getting a chance to dive a little bit into the personal case for Jeffrey, what we saw in turn was him getting an offer to help turn Sophe into more of a business. It makes sense that some would want to monetize it, but that goes against what the entire service is about at the moment. (Granted, turning down this offer could have further ramifications down the road.)
In getting back to the personal case now, Jeffrey was able to track down the location of Ryan Booth. However, he didn’t quite get what he was hoping for. Ryan didn’t kill Mia; instead, he actually was a patient along with her at Grand Pines. She wasn’t working there as Jeffrey thought! Eventually Jeffrey confronted his ex-wife Alex over it, and she made it clear that it was her choice as to who she will tell.
CarterMatt Verdict
Wisdom of the Crowd may be the sleeper of the fall season. Episode 3 was a significant step up from episode 2, and while we do think that the whole idea of Sophe is a little too optimistic for its own good sometimes the show accomplished a lot over the course of the hour tonight and showcased both the reach and power of Jeffrey’s platform.
